Lynn McKellar, 36, lost his sight eight years ago after suffering an extreme reaction to an antibiotic during a visit to the dentist. But her vision returned to normal operation by transplanting some teeth into his eyes.
"I can see. It's a miracle. After years in the darkness, I could see pictures of my son. I can read a headline in the Daily Record, and when my eyes are not swollen anymore, my eyesight will improve," said Lynn.
Lynn views cured by a doctor by taking a piece of gear and drilled so that the lens can be used as a container. Broken teeth and lens were then transplanted into the eyes. A transplanted tissue from the cheek to give the blood supply. Using a dental surgeon who is still alive in this procedure because the synthetic material most likely be rejected by the body.
In 2004, Lynn was on the brink of death during a routine visit to the dentist to pull teeth. At that time, reaction to antibiotics given in the form of a very rare condition, Stevens-Johnson syndrome.
Most of his skin peeled off, he became blind because his eyes affixed on the eyelids, her hair falling out and sticking in his back, his lungs were damaged and he must spend his life in a life support machine.
The specialist burns in Stirling Royal Infirmary should be consulted for skin conditions are very extreme. But Lynn is determined to fight for his son Jack, who just two years old.
"I have reason to fight for life and it is Jack. I will not leave. I do not know how the staff at the hospital were able to treat me because of my condition only occurs in one in a million people," Lynn said as reported by the Daily Record , Friday (02/17/2012).
Lynn had to stay in hospital for two years and he has undergone 50 operations. Her skin gradually improved, and there is little hope for restoring vision. Lynn started the long process of rehabiliatsi assisted by his mother, Anne, and her sister, Allison, Tracey, June and Gail.
Lynn had a procedure called osteo-odonto-keratoprosthesis or OOKP in his right eye in 2006. But after showing signs of success, the infection occurs and vision is lost again.
Hopes to be able to see again then obtained from a surgeon named Chris Liu of Sussex Eye Hospital in England. Dr Liu perform surgery on Wednesday, February 8th ago and the dressing is removed on Friday.
"When the bandage is removed, I could see the fingers of Mr. Liu. He throw the bandages and then I saw the window. I immediately knew what it was. As soon as I can see again, I called Gail. He wants to be the first to know how the operation . He was at work and I cried on the phone that I can see. He cried and he cried to his comrades, "said Lynn.
Actually there is no guarantee that the current vision Lynn will be better. Within two to four years, he will need a new gear for the left eye to sight this condition can go on. But for now, just enjoy the sight of Lynn has returned.
Lynn has lost three teeth as he went through the procedure. Gail has volunteered to donate one of his teeth when his brother needed later. During the operation, some parts of the patient's teeth removed, reshaped and sculpted until it could be a place to hold an artificial lens is then placed in it.
Teeth with this lens is implanted under the eyelid. This process requires a living as a dental implant because doctors suggest there is risk of eye will reject it as well as refusing a plastic implant. Gear is selected according to the shape and size. Most of the skin taken from the inside of the cheek and placed in the eye for two months, so it will gradually gain its own blood supply.
Tooth fragments are then transplanted into the eye socket. Folds of skin on the cheek and then removed from the eye and placed on a solid new foundation. Finally, the surgeon cuts a hole in the grafted cornea so that light can pass.
This operation requires five separate procedures, namely:(1) eyes open, then the entire surface of the eyelids, corneal surface and all the scar tissue removed(2) layer of the skin of the cheeks grafted onto the surface of a new eye(3) The adjacent teeth or bone taken(4) A bolt-shaped structure made from the teeth and bones are equipped with plastic optical cylinder(5) The composition of the cylinder of the tooth and bone were implanted into the patient's cheek to grow a new blood supply
